1940–2001

Nazi regime, war and the construction of the Berlin Wall brought the quarter economic decline and isolation. Many guest workers settled because of the low rent in Kreuzberg. Max and Moritz was to be turned into a furniture store, the old furniture was already in the basement.

Gerhard Schofer, a graduate theologian from Baden recognized the potential of the inn, brought the furniture back out of the basement and recreated the old inn with great attention to detail anew. Soon, students and artists alike came to the district.

After the wall came down, many people moved away, which is what kept the inn afloat. In 1996-1998 the traditional restaurant was renovated by Bewoge.

Due to the long closing time the former host Jÿrgen Teichmann’s guests stayed away and he gave the place to Britta Baksa-soos and Stefan Zosel in March 2001
